This first paragraph is the background for me contacting the admin, the second is my discussion with the admin, the third is my understanding of the situation and the final paragraph is what I would like to happen.
The incident started with me asking for adminhelp for what I felt was the captain pushing grand theft on a beefboy who had stolen their pet monkey. I arrested and talked with the beefboy for a while and got what I felt to be the full story. Essentially the beefman was protesting outside of the captain’s office that they needed to return the monkey that captain had taken from the bar. The captain then batoned the beefboy then took the picket sign. The beefboy apparently “unintentionally” teleported themself into the captain’s office. Upon which they were immediately batoned by the captain and cuffed. The beefboy tried to explain it all to the captain, that they did not intend to go teleport into the captain’s office. The captain handed the beefboy off to me and I just noted that the beefboy teleported into the captain’s office “accidentally” in their record and let them go. Sounded like a mixup and a misunderstanding. The beefboy was not happy with my ruling and went and teleported INTENTIONALLY into the office and stole the captain’s newly adopted pet monkey. Little did the beefboy know that the Nuke disk was inside the monkey’s chest cavity. Now, I realize now that once the beefboy learned that the nuke disk was inside the monkey, that they should have returned her (it was a female monkey) to the captain. Otherwise they would indeed be guilty of grand theft. But at the time of hearing all of this it sounded like the beefboy had committed theft and trespassing and did not INTEND to steal the nuke disk. Therefore they were not guilty of grand theft. I put a tracker in them and talked with the HoS a bit and I got the feeling that the HoS agreed that it was just a petty revenge plot and was not really a serious crime like grand theft with antag intentions. I put them on parole and told them that if they committed another crime that their punishment would be much worse and that we had them tracked so as not to try anything. They were happy with the judgment and agreed to not commit any more crimes or mess with the captain. I did all this against the Captain’s wish as I felt the captain was pushing a charge onto the suspect that I felt they were not guilty of. I think I said something along the lines of “You’re not above the law” to the captain. The captain then went to HoS and convinced them (I didn’t hear the conversation) to go ahead with demoting me. I ran away and hid in a locker in maint and contacted ahelp as I felt the captain was trying to get me demoted for not acting outside the law and executing their will. Instead of executing the law, like my job description tells me to. I will say I failed to include “Theft” in their charges. That’s my bad, but I would have added it in a heartbeat if I was told I forgot.
So now I’m gonna try and remember this to the best of my ability. I forgot to save the logs before exiting out so this is all testimony. Feel free to reference the logs, I will try my best to be as accurate as possible. I contacted the admin asking that I may need centcom (or something like that) in dealing with the captain. I wrote about 75% of what I wrote above for you and they replied with “It’s grand theft, you are guilty and should be demoted” and closed the ticket with the IC alert. I then ahelped again, saying “But doesn’t grand theft mean they intended to steal it?” They retorted with something along the same lines and said that I should deal with the issue in character. Again closing the ticket with the IC alert. I ahelped AGAIN stating that I felt that there was a very slim chance the captain was going to listen to anything I could say to stop my demotion. I also added that I still didn’t understand how what they did was grand theft. They eventually replied with “Well you can argue this some more on the forums for your ban appeal. You’ve been around long enough to know not to spam ahelp.” Bang I’m banned.
Now I’ll say, yes I did spam ahelp. At the time I wasn’t even aware of the rule but I will say I knew I was pushing it since repeatedly messaging someone who doesn’t want to talk to you is rude. I am also now aware (after reading through the laws more thoroughly, as well as talking to a friend who knows the laws as well) that the person was technically guilty of grand theft once they had learned they had the nuke disk and REFUSED to give it back. Where I think the admin went wrong was that they refused to answer my questions and shut it down as an IC issue. I am not aware of the admin code of conduct but I would think that being an admin they would try to answer questions such as the nitty gritty of laws. Things that, in my experience, mentors are not particularly well versed in. Laws which I have been told that when it comes down to understanding the specifics of a law that I could turn to an admin. I’m not sure if this is included either but a simple warning would have shut me up pretty quick. I had no real idea that I was one ahelp away from being banned or even close to being banned as I felt my questions were just for using ahelp. If an admin doesn’t know I would say it would make sense that they would give their opinion on how I should conduct myself (turn myself in perhaps) and then forward me to the discord and fulp lawbook to help me better understand. Instead I was told “You’re wrong, this is in character” (essentially) and then closed from the ticket repeatedly. This to me is clear negligence on the admin’s side. If they felt they were not up for explaining laws to players then I would say it would be best if they don’t sign on as an admin that day. They intentionally refused to give my questions much thought and repeatedly closed me off from communicating with them. They did not refer me to anyone or even state that they couldn’t answer the question. They just denied service.
I think I am guilty of spamming ahelp, but I also think this is a unique situation. After later reading the rules again I see that if an admin shuts you down with an IC alert and you feel it was unjust, that you should just Staff report. So sorry for not knowing the rules and I plan to just work around the admin if I think they’re being troublesome. It is up to your interpretation as to whether I deserved the full ban or not. Personally I think this was a misunderstanding and would rather the ban be removed/edited from my record. I also no life ss13 pretty hard so 3 days is a long time… I’m already biting my nails.
P.S. I know this reads a lot like a staff report but know that I already made one and that I felt that this ban appeal relies heavily on the admin’s actions.
Post Verdict: Jeez Guillaume. I’m not upset. I have no hard feelings. Breathe homie. I even admitted to me being wrong I just wasn’t sure if it was special circumstance and changes the initial verdict. Since I felt the admin was acting unorthodox I thought that might be special circumstances. Breathe. It’s all cool homie.
