I can be your Angler or your Devilfish: A Master Angler's guide to becoming feared by all

PREFACE

So, you finally decided to pick up the rod and go down the long and lonesome road of fishing, know that this path is long winded, one that will take you from the comfort of your own station to the burning sands of Lavaland and even beyond. There is hope, however, as daunting as catching every fish could seem, it can be very rewarding, leading you to new insights and ways of interacting with your crewmates. This guide will take you through almost everything I personally know about fishing, from my own firsthand experiences to some more in depth guides about certain fish related things

CHAPTER 0: TEACHING A MAN TO FISH

I didn’t even consider the fact that someone could potentially not know how to fish, but it is very simple, I can put it into a simple step by step process

  1. Get a fishing rod and tackle
  2. Find a fishing spot
  3. With the fishing rod in your active hand, click on the fishing spot to cast your line
  4. If you are using lures instead of bait, click every time the bobber turns green
  5. When a fish bites, click again
  6. The fishing minigame will begin, you need to keep your green area over the fish symbol, simply hold click to move it up and release to drop it (this is assuming no other modifiers are present)
  7. When the green bar fills up all the way, you will land your catch automatically

That is all there is to it.

CHAPTER 1: I HAVE NO ROD, AND I MUST FISH

Everyone knows you need a rod to fish, but there is more to it than just getting a stick, a string, and a hook, this section will cover all the equipment you can find, make, and use. But before we go into it, one should know that there are many factors that can alter the difficulty of catching fish, or even alter the very fish themselves! I cannot possibly hope to cover every single thing that can change fishing difficulty, but I will cover things specifically related to fishing. Also what is important to note is that the harder a fish is to catch, the more fishing experience you can gain from it

RODS

Rod Name Where to find it Notes
Fishing Rod Most lathes, typically packaged in basic fishing equipment, can be bought as a rescue rod from mining As basic as they come, while there are no distinct benefits, there are also no real downsides.
Bone Rod Crafting Not that different from the Basic Rod, perfect for miners though!
Telescopic Rod Can be bought from a Good Clean Fun vendor (typically found in libraries), or purchased in a single pack from cargo Actually slightly better than Basic Rods, can even fit in your backpack!
Advanced Rod Must be researched by Science, potentially found in most lathes afterward Better than a Basic Rod, can produce an infinite supply of all purpose bait that can catch any fish, and scans fish for fish scanning research automatically, but cannot fold up
Athletic Fishing Gloves Must be researched by Science, then potentially found in most lathes, the MOD module can be built by a Roboticist’s mech fabricator These gloves make it so you do not need to hold a rod to fish, it is also quite a workout so it can improve, (And is effected by) your athletics too! Fair warning, catching larger fish with this rod can lead to personal injury. Also comes in the form of a MOD module
Material Rod Autolathes These rods are special as they can drastically change aspects of the fish you catch, and can make it possible to fish on lava with the right materials. They can even catch fish made out of the very same material of the rod!
Master Rod Rare maintenance loot, only one (possibly two, have yet to confirm) can be found in hotsprings, and only one (ditto) for oil wells, (do not know if it is on a per turf tile basis), possible drop from fishing mystery boxes It lives up to it’s name, it is a very powerful rod that greatly improves fishing, can even potentially be Metalgenned

LINES

Line Name Where to get it Notes
Basic Line Usually comes attached to every rod As basic as they come, despite what you would think, you can actually fish without this, but it is easier to fish with it
Sinew Line Crafting, comes attached to bone fishing rods Can fish on lava and plasma, but it makes the minigame harder
Reinforced Line Fishing line sets, purchasable from Good Clean Fun vendors or from cargo Can fish on lava and plasma
Cloaked Line see above Makes it easier to catch more skittish fish
Flexible Line see above Reduces progress drain during fishing
Auto Reel Line Researched by Science, possibly found in most lathes or just in the science lathe This powerful line can do most of the work for you, not only will it automatically set the hook when a fish bites, it will automatically reel it in for you, it even goes through the trouble of automatically spinning lures for you!
Bluespace Line Same as Auto Reel, but on another tech node This line can phase through pretty much any wall and boasts the longest casting range, seeing as the line also makes the hook and whatever you catch phase too, it can have some VERY SILLY uses

HOOKS

Hook Name Where to find it Notes
Basic Hook Comes with most fishing rods Unlike lines or bait, hooks are absolutely mandatory
Bone Hook Crafted, comes attached to bone fishing rods Not any different from a basic hook
Magnet Hook Fishing hook sets purchasable from Good Clean Fun vendors or from cargo Improves your chances at catching things that aren’t fish, at the cost of making it harder to catch fish (obviously)
Shiny Hook see above Attracts fish that love shiny objects, also improves the rate at catching material fish with material rods
Weighted Hook see above Reduces the bounciness of hitting the bottom of the fishing minigame
Rescue Hook Mining point vendors and possibly cargo Can only catch people who have fallen into chasms, but can still be used to grab things from afar (like in plasma pools)
Gyro Stabilized Hook Research, then lathes Removes the effects of gravity in the fishing minigame, you can move down by right clicking
Jawed Hook Black Market Makes it impossible to lose the fishing minigame by normal means, at the cost of killing the fish you catch in the process, also works on people, but obviously doesn’t kill them

MISC. ITEMS

These items aren’t ones that you can attach to your rod, but are related to fishing in general

Item Name Where to find Notes
Lures and Bait Lures can be purchased from Good Clean Fun vendors or ordered from Cargo, bait can come from anywhere, from worms to even lead acid batteries Okay I lied, these you can attach to your rod, it’s just that I have only used lures for fishing instead of bait, while lures can catch specific types of fish, it is easier and less resource intensive than just getting a specific fish with it’s favourite food
Fish Analyzer From above vendor or made from a lathe after research While you can use a normal experiscanner to complete fish research, these scanners can track the health of a fish, it’s weight and length, what kind of traits it has, and can show if it can evolve or not
Mast Angl-Er Skillchip Purchased from above vendor, can be automatically inserted at roundstart with the Chipped quirk Gives you insight on fishing usually reserved for higher levels of fishing skill, and can give you useful tips
Fish Porter Can be found prebuilt on some stations, or can be constructed Absolutely necessary for catching most fish
Aquarium Constructed, Aquarium Kit is needed, and can be made by a lathe One of the key components to greater fish mechanics, can be upgraded into a biogenerator
Fish Tank Purchased from the above vendor or crafted with an Aquarium kit Ditto, but portable. Can be upgraded into a bluespace fish tank to increase capacity
Fishing Catalog Can be purchased from the above vendor or from cargo While not necessary, it has details on (almost) every catchable fish
Fishing Spot Capsule Rare maintenance loot, Fished from beaches, or black market You can change which spot you can fish from with right click, can potentially get you fish you would otherwise not have access to, and the ocean portal can potentially give you fishing lootboxes!
Fish Trait Injector Researched and produced by Science Can remove, and subsequently add, traits to fish, provided you have syringes
Fishy Reagent Chemistry Can revive dead fishes
Lifish Chemistry Can produce a wide variety of fish, uncertain if catching these will actually mark them into your fishdex, however
Fishing bags/Fish Cases Can be purchased or crafted For storing fish with varying degrees of effectiveness, generally not the best for keeping them alive though
Master Angler Hat Expertrak Skill Tracker reward (PDA) Only the worthy are able to wear this hat, it not only stands as a symbol of your power, but it’s aura strikes fear into the cold empty hearts of space carps, frogs, and lobstrocities alike

CHAPTER 2: WHERE MY FISHES AT

Now that you have at least the basics in fishing equipment, you will now need to know where the fishes are. This chapter will cover the many fishing spots in the game, even ones you would never expect! Please do note that there is a difference between spots listed in the Fishporter and actual spots where you can fish of the same classification, you can link a number of fishing spots to a fishporter (provided it is upgraded) by linking it with a multitool (use on porter first to get the signal, then use on fishing spot to link). Also, do not forget to do fish scanning experiments! It is absolutely necessary to unlock new Fishporter settings!

Puddles They tend to be in garden areas of the station Tadpole None You cannot actually fish in puddles, you must attack a puddle with an empty hand to attempt to scoop out a tadpole

CHAPTER 3: KNOW THY ANENOME

Now that you know where fish live, it is time to talk traits. If you mostly do not care about the uses of fish outside of eating them or catching them for the love of the game, you can ignore this part and many others. For the rest of you who want more value out of fish, be it out of biogenerators, unique weapons, or for simple aquarium displays, you will need to learn how traits work and how fishes interact with one another. Traits can be given and taken away by a couple of factors, if a fish has one trait, it’s offspring could have it too, some fish evolve and either gain or loose traits, and you can simply transfer traits between fish with a trait gun from science (fair warning, injecting more than one trait into a fish WILL kill it)

I have listed the traits into three groups, Good Traits, Neutral Traits, and Bad Traits, while I have listed them as such, they can still be good or bad depending on what you want to achieve with them

GOOD TRAITS

Trait Description Intrinsic to Use case
Self Revival Revives itself shortly after it dies Unmarine Bonemass, Unmarine Mastodon, Mossglob Infinitely useful as most fish are more useful alive than dead, can even remove the multiple trait penalty from using the trait gun!
Amphibious Fish can Breathe both air and water Burrower Crab, Bumpfish, Unmarine Mastodon Some fish can only really be used by having them outside of water, very useful to have
Mixotroph Fish doesn’t need to eat Monocloning Jumpercable, Cosmostarfish Makes it so you do not have to feed the fish at all! Combine with self revival and amphibious for an immortal fish!
Electrogenesis Fish generates electric fields Anxious Zipzap, Monocloning Jumpercable Primarily useful for biogenerators
Stinger Fish has a blade or a stinger to deliver damage or toxins Stingray, Swordfish, Chainsawfish, Armored Pike, Walro-Dolphish, Mossglob Fish with these can be used as weapons, have yet to see if transferring between fish works. The larger the fish, the more damage it does, also the fish does more damage alive than dead
Toxic Barbs The stinger or bill of the fish is coated in venom Stingray, Mossglob While it needs the stinger trait to work, it makes it hurt all the more >:)
Ink Production Produces ink with an ink sac Squid You can temporarily blind people by attacking them with a fish with this trait, or you can harvest the ink
Toxin Immunity Fish is immune to toxins Slimefish, Mossglob None

Picky Eater Fish is very picky and will only eat it’s favourite food Fryish, Fritterish, Nessiefish, Armored Pike, Babbelfish, Clownfish, Lubefish Just use An Artificial fly lure
Nocturnal Fish avoids light Lanternfish, Mossglob Use an LED lure, and fishing in the dark DOES help
Demersal Fish stays near the seabed Pufferfish, Squid, Monkfish, Plaice, Unmarine Mastodon, Lavaloop, Gullion, Babbelfish None

Parthenogenesis Fish reproduces Asexually Sludgefish, Purple Sludgefish, Monocloning Jumpercable, Gullion Can be great for fish that have good traits, bad for ones that don’t
Recessive In crossbreeding, the resulting fish will be the one without this trait, unless if the mate has it too Purple Sludgefish, Three Eyed Goldfish, Mcgill None
Yucky This fish tastes terrible and no fish will eat it Donk Co. Company Patent Donkfish, Mossglob None
Toxic Contains deadly toxin Pufferfish Best given to fish with stingers and toxic barbs
Carpotoxic Contains deadly carpotoxin Baby Carp Best given to fish with stingers and toxic barbs, felinids are immune
Crossbreeder Fish can breed with other fish species Slimefish None
Mateless Fish cannot reproduce Holographic Fish, Sludgefish, Purple Sludgefish, Fryish, Tadpole, Anxious Zipzap, Baby Carp None
Anti Gravity Fish sometimes inverts gravity of bait, could fall upwards if caught on icebox Cosmostarfish, Chrystarfish None

Lubed Fish is coated in lube Lubefish, Mossglob Fun if you are troublemaker
Anxiety Fish can easily die of stress by being surrounded by 3 or more fish Anxious Zipzap None

CHAPTER 4: THE FIRST AND GREATEST MISTAKE FISH HAVE EVER MADE

I am of course talking about evolution. Fish evolution in ss13 is typically done through breeding, or waiting, certain species of fish can evolve into other types of fish, or grow into a full on mob, but fish can only evolve if certain conditions are met. ones that can evolve can be tracked on a fish analyzer, but this in depth guide can help you out in greater detail. Do note that this is the only way to catch certain fish on certain rounds. An important thing to also note is that fish will not evolve if they are hungry, have low health, are dead (duh), live in a tank that is either too full or has breeding disabled, or if they require breeding but have the mateless trait and don’t have parthenogenesis

Evolved Fish Base Fish Evolution Type Evolution Requirements Caught Elsewhere?
Lubefish Clownfish Breeding Must be fed Space Lube (pour into tank) Yes
Purple Sludgefish Sludgefish Breeding None! Sludgefish Reproduce via the Parthenogenesis trait No
Unmarine Mastodon Unmarine Bonemass Breeding Both fish must be VERY large and heavy, achieved either over time, through feeding growth serum, or through weight modifiers from material rods Yes
Arctic Chrab Chasm Chrab Mutation Fishtank temperature must be between 9 and 10 Yes
Chasm Chrab Arctic Chrab Mutation Fishtank temperature must be between 14 and 15 Yes
Three Eyed Goldfish Goldfish Mutation Probably needs to be fed some kind of toxic waste or mutagen Yes

Juvenile Arctic Lobstrosity Arctic Chrab Growth See above Yes
Arctic Lobstrocity Juvenile Arctic Lobstrocity Growth See above Yes
Frog/Rare Frog Tadpole Growth Happens over time Yes

CHAPTER 5: AQUARIUMS (I HAVE RUN OUT OF JOKES)

Fuck I dunno man, this is just listing fish by their beauty class in order to make the most appealing display for room-wide mood buffs. Fish have varying levels of beauty, and the combined total will either boost your mood upon admiring it or tank it. The ranks, from lowest to highest are: Disgusting, Ugly, Bad, Null, Generic, Good, Great and Excellent. Aquariums can have a minimum beauty rating of -3500 and a maximum rating of 6000, dead fish will lower the score regardless of their rank

Also for Biogenerator Aquariums, one MUST use fish with electrogenesis, and set up a tesla coil and grounding rod, for everyone’s safety, and to actually make use of the electricity

Rank Score Fish
Excellent 700 Soulfish, Swordfish, Chrystarfish, Gullion, Nessiefish, Donk Co. Company Patent Donkfish
Great 600 Cosmostarfish, Baby Carp, Chainsawfish, Armored Pike, Lubefish, Stingray, Skin Crab, Arctic Chrab, Slimefish, Walro-Dolphish, Mcgill (Three Eyed)
Good 450 Sockeye Salmon, Pike, Zagoskian Moonfish, Gunner Jellyfish, Chasm Chrab, Lavaloop, Pufferfish, Squid, Sand Surfer, Holographic Crab, Fryish, Mcgill, Three Eyed Goldfish, Catfish, Anxious Zipzap, Sacambaspis
Generic 250 There are actually no fish listed with this rank in the code, I assume this is the rank all the fishes not listed here have
Null 0 Unrendered Holographic fish, Babbelfish, Tadpole, Lanternfish, Sludgefish
Bad -200 Unmarine Mastodon, Bumpfish, Toxic Emulsijack
Ugly -300 Holographic Half-Fish, Monkfish, Flumpulus, Unmarine Bonemass, Monocloning Jumpercable,
Disgusting -500 Ratfish, Mossglob

CHAPTER 6: EXTRA BONUS CRAP

This is just where I would put extra information that doesn’t really need it’s own category, some stuff listed here will require further study

  • Fishing Rods made out of Bluespace Crystal could supposedly be able to get fish from any source
  • Bananium Fishing Rods either have a higher potential to catch silly fish or can only catch them regardless of where it is cast (Clownfish, Lubefish, Soulfish, Skin Crab, Donk Co. Company Patent Donkfish)
  • Material Fish caught with a Mythril rod will spawn with mythril bonuses, and can cycle through random bonuses as they grow
  • Paper Fishing rods have a chance to catch Stickmen, Stickman Rangers, and Stick dogs
  • Bone Material rods either have a higher chance of catching boney fish and other skeletal objects or can only catch them (Unmarine Bonemass, Unmarine Mastodon, Skeleton (Alive), Ice Skeleton (Alive), Templar Skeleton (Alive), Spectral Trumpet, Spectral Saxophone, Spectral Trombone)
  • Fishing Rods made out of Telecrystals will take from the Syndicate Fishporter pool instead of the chosen pool
  • Fishing Rods are an effective weapon on carps and people with fish DNA
  • Babbelfish, provided you have the required strength to do it, can be split in half (at the cost of some brain damage) and can be inserted into your ears to give you supernatural levels of hearing and can protect you from mind magic, but at the risk of either being able to speak all languages but understand none, or understand every language and speak none, or the super rare chance of being able to speak and understand all languages
  • Babbelfish also have an alternative version of the Emulsifier trait, where it constantly releases psychic energy to kill fish and mess with humanoids, and on death, they let out a wail that kills every fish in earshot and does a lot of mental damage to humanoids
  • Many fish have unique suicides, some more unique than others!
  • Space Sharks and Magicarps will prioritize attacking people wearing Master Angler hats
  • If you can raise a Chrab up to it’s juvenile stage and feed it a lavaloop or plasmaloop, it will become tamed
  • Lavaloops and Plasmaloops can be thrown as reliable reusable projectiles, just try not to blow your arms off
  • Some predatory and/or carnivorous fish will bite you when you pet them
  • Mcgill is a pet goldfish (sometimes a three eyed one) of the Lawyer and can sometimes spawn in a fish tank in the law office, despite him being unique in some ways, he is NOT a different species of fish
  • Chasm/Arctic Lobstrosities are able to fish, too, they can be commanded to if tamed, and hostile ones can be found fishing if they are hungry
  • The bigger a fish is, the more filets and reagents you can get from it
  • Opening an Aquarium’s panel and setting it to “Safe Mode” will prevent fish death, but also prevent fish growth
  • Certain clothing items, held items, and even chairs can alter fishing difficulty
  • Giving fish mutagen can improve the chance of them producing their evolved offspring, and giving them growth serum can improve growth
  • The Walro-Dolphish, while one of, if not the strongest weapon fish, absolutely hates being held, and will eventually bite you if you hold it for too long (granted it is still alive of course)
  • The size of a fish will determine if it can fit in certain containers or if it needs two hands to be held
  • Chrystarfish make for fancy, if very rare, shuriken, which can embed and have the added bonus of teleporting the embedded victim wildly
  • Flumpulus can be forced into people’s eyes if you attack someone with it, they even make for a nice landing cushion or extracted for Flumpuline, a stronger version of oculine, but with a side effect
  • Zagoskian Moonfish can lay eggs, which is the Tiziran equivalent of caviar, very nice and expensive
  • As their name would imply, Chainsawfish can be used as a saw
  • Inspecting heretic rifts for fish as a non heretic will still give you a massive mood debuff and mental damage, linking it to a fishporter can remove this effect, but some of the other risks still remain (requires further study)
  • Mossglobs are by far the nastiest fish you can ever catch, they are effectively immortal due to the self revival trait, have both attacking traits, are lubed and hallucinogenic, and are extremely violent to everything, and can even move on land to attack people. Destroy it! or you could sic em on the unsuspecting crew…
  • Some fish have unique filets (different than just plain fish meat, they have their own properties, you can tell by inspecting them) and/or grinding results
  • Swordfish, Monkfish, Pufferfish and Babbelfish are the only sources of quality fish meat
  • Mounting a fish on a fish mount can save it so it will spawn as a decoration on new rounds, it will even mark the day you caught it, and the name of who caught it, but if you remove one that was on a mount, it is highly likely to dust itself, so it’s better to make a new one instead of getting rid of my prized Mythril Armored Pike!!

That concludes this guide, I will add more if I ever figure out anything new, and feel free to let me know about new things in particular should they arise. Now if you’ll excuse me…
