What happened:

The roboticist asked if he could build a second AI early in the shift, both the RD and captain refused. As a result, after techcult researched AI tech, they along with MD John Chaser went and attempted to build one anyway, in secret, inside of the janitorial closet. Neither of them were antagonists.
